Chapter Four
Pippa
As soon as we touched down in Houston, I got an alert that our layover wasnât going to be as quick or as smooth as I had hoped.
âThe bastard found them at the safe house,â Emmie said as soon as I was able to safely pick up my phone. âThey spotted him in a car as they were leaving, but heâs a sheriffâs deputy, Pippa.â
âThereâre no other cops Jackie trusts?â
âThey didnât even take her seriously when he nearly beat her to death two weeks ago,â Emmie growled.
I squeezed the bridge of my nose. âOkay. This is fine. Everythingâ¦will be fine.â I took a deep breath. âDo you have any connections here in Houston, other than with the shelter?â
âI have connections everywhere, but at the moment, my Texas connection is in Oklahoma.â
Exhaling slowly, I pushed to my feet. âIâve got this. Donât worry about anything. Chloe and her mother will arrive safe and sound.â
âPippa, be careful. This guy is unstable. They wonât be safe until they are at Sanctuary. Then hopefully Chloe can find some peace and be able to move on.â
My love and appreciation for Emmie Armstrong only doubled. If only someone had cared about me like that. Blinking back tears, I steeled myself for what might happen. âIt shouldnât take that long, but if I havenât emailed you in an hour, send backup.â
âBe careful.â
Dropping my phone in my chair, I sprinted out of the cockpit and unlocked the door. Even as the stairs started to descend, I was hopping down them. The SUV that was supposed to bring Chloe and her mother Jackie to me was already pulling up on the tarmac.
Heart racing, I noted the gray sedan that followed at a slower pace behind them. The vehicle was unauthorized, but given that Jackieâs ex was a cop, I had to assume heâd flashed his badge to get past the security.
I waved the driver of the SUV forward, urging him to hurry, but he took his time getting closer to the jet. I jumped the last three steps and started running. All I needed was the two passengers on my plane, and then I could get us in the air. I didnât actually need to refuel. I would drive the damn plane around the entire airport if I had to until I got my takeoff slot.
âPippa?â
I didnât bother to glance back at the open door of the plane. Eddie called to me again, and I yelled back, âAs soon as we start up those steps, press the button to pull up the stairs!â
âWhatâs going on?â he demanded.
âJust do as I say. Please!â I cried.
When I was two feet away from the SUV, the back door opened and Jackie stepped out, but her gaze wasnât on me or the little girl who got out behind her. It was on the sedan. The man behind the wheel stomped on his brakes when he saw his wife, and I grasped her wrist, tugging her around to face me. âRun!â I commanded, picking Chloe up.
